How Swim Lesson Levels Work at Goldfish Swim School

At Goldfish, we utilize a proprietary curriculum designed to meet children where they are developmentally. Our approach focuses on building confidence through a specialized science-based method.

Structuring our swimming lesson levels is fantastically beneficial for swimmers and our crew alike! For swimmers, it gives them the opportunity to learn from both their swim teacher and other children of the same age and swim ability: a true example of watching and learning!

For our crew, it means swim teachers can focus on teaching a certain set of skills, and give attention to their swimmers to help them get their 3-stars to swim off to the next level!

Age-Based Milestones Across Swim Lesson Levels — What Parents Can Expect

Understanding the different levels for swimming helps you visualize your child’s journey from their first splash to mastering all four major strokes.

Mini (Infant & Baby)

Mini (Baby) – for children ages 4 through 35 months who are just starting out in lessons or have a tiny bit of lesson experience. In these classes, we focus on water acclimation and basic safety, such as supervised entries and getting faces wet. This early exposure helps prevent the fear of drowning by building comfort in a shiver-free facility that keeps babies happy and relaxed.

Junior (Beginner–Intermediate)

Junior – these levels are for our 3 and 4 year olds that are beginner-intermediate swimmers. At this age, we focus on independence. Swimmers learn to transition from holding a teacher’s hand to performing glides and kicks on their own. These age-based swim lesson levels ensure that your preschooler is learning alongside peers with similar motor skills, making the experience social and encouraging.

Glider (Beginner–Intermediate)

Glider – designed for 5 through 12-year-old beginner-intermediate swimmers. As children grow, so does their strength. In Glider, we move beyond the basics to focus on side-breathing and proper body position. These levels of swimming are vital for school-aged kids who are starting to spend more time at pool parties or beaches and need the endurance to stay supported in deeper water.

Pro (Intermediate–Advanced)

Pro – for 4 through 12-year-old swimmers who are comfortable with a variety of swim skills and are more advanced. This is where technique meets precision. Swimmers refine their butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke, preparing them for swim teams or advanced recreational swimming. It’s the ultimate goal of our swimming levels: producing confident, technical, and safer swimmers.

How Goldfish Swim School Supports Every Stage Of Progress

Our swim teachers advance children through to the next level as each swimmer is ready: aka, they’ve mastered all of the skills in that level! There’s no pressure to move up at the same pace as other swimmers, because each swimmer progresses individually, not as a class.

Our 3-star rating system helps children, parents, and swim teachers have an idea of where their little Goldfish are in their swim abilities for each level.

It’s broken down like this:

  • 1 – Your swimmer has been introduced to a new skill and can perform it with the help of their swim teacher.
  • 2 – Your swimmer can perform the skill with little help from their swim teacher.
  • 3 – Your swimmer can fully perform a skill independently and consistently: they’re seeing Extraordinary Results!

Once a child has 3-stars in each of the skills that level focuses on, they’re ready to swim off to the next level! Using this star system allows children to jump into the next level when they are ready, allowing them to learn at their own pace.

Common Questions Parents Ask About Swim Lesson Levels

Navigating a child’s progress can sometimes feel like a waiting game, but every minute in our 90-degree pool is a step toward a safer future.

Why Hasn’t My Child Moved Up Yet?

Progress isn’t always linear. Sometimes a child needs to build physical strength or coordination before they can master a specific skill required for the next level. We focus on mastery to ensure they are truly supportive when they move to more advanced skills.

My Child Was Doing Great — Why Do They Suddenly Seem Stuck?

Plateaus are a normal part of the learning process. It often means your child is working on a complex skill that takes more muscle memory to click. Our small class sizes (4:1) allow our teachers to give them the specific attention needed to break through these hurdles!

Will Missing Lessons Slow Progress?

Consistency is key to skill retention. Since we offer year-round lessons, staying in a routine helps prevent skill regression, where a child forgets what they learned during a long break.

Is It Worth Staying In The Same Level A Little Longer?

Absolutely. It is much better for a child to be the strongest swimmer in a lower level than the most overwhelmed swimmer in a higher one. Building a confidence cushion leads to better long-term results!

What If My Child Is Nervous In The Water?

Our teachers are trained to use The Science of SwimPlay® to turn fear into fun! We use integrity, compassion, and trust to help nervous swimmers feel at ease in our tropical environment.
